Sympathy for the Agent: Controlling an agent's nonverbal repertoire: An extended abstract

چکیده
Humans exhibit a wide repertoire of nonverbal behaviors, behaviors that can serve a variety of functions both for the person exhibiting them as well as for people observing them. For example, deictic gestures[10] (e.g., pointing) play a central, intended role in communicating information to another person. On the other hand, a gesture such as rubbing one's thigh or a facial expression of fear may have no explicitly intended role in communication. Nevertheless, they may reveal considerable information about a person, their emotional arousal, their attitudes and traits. In particular, observers can reliably infer a person’s emotions and attitudes from their nonverbal behaviors [4] and therefore potentially respond in a variety of ways, such as by empathizing. At the same time, there are individual and cultural differences in the use of such behaviors as well as differences due to an individual's current role. Overall, nonverbal behaviors play a major role in identifying a person as a unique personality as well as a role in helping others forge an identification with them.

Motivated Agents Motivated Agents
We 1 present a method for controlling autonomous agents in un-predictible environments. For this, the agent's architecture of Hayes-Roth et al. (1995) is extended regarding spontaneous goal generation and goal selection. This method seems psychologically plausible under the term motivation. In addition, its implementation exhibits attractive real-time characteristics, relating environment, agen...
متن کاملProcess algebraic modeling of authentication protocols for analysis of parallel multi-session executions
Many security protocols have the aim of authenticating one agent acting as initiator to another agent acting as responder and vice versa. Sometimes, the authentication fails because of executing several parallel sessions of a protocol, and because an agent may play both the initiator and responder role in parallel sessions. We take advantage of the notion of transition systems to specify authen...
متن کاملKnow Your Users! Empirical Results for Tailoring an Agent's Nonverbal Behavior to Different User Groups
Since embodied agents are considered as equally usable by all kinds of users, not much attention has been paid to the influence of users ́ attributes on the evaluation of agents in general and their (nonverbal) behaviour in particular. Here, we present evidence from three empirical studies with the agent Max, which focus on the effects of participants` gender, age and computer literacy. The resu...
متن کاملThe Effects of an Embodied Conversational Agent's Nonverbal Behavior on User's Evaluation and Behavioral Mimicry
Against the background that recent studies on embodied conversational agents demonstrate the importance of their behavior, an experimental study is presented that assessed the effects of different nonverbal behaviors of an embodied conversational agent on the users ́ experiences and evaluations as well as on their behavior. 50 participants conducted a conversation with different versions of the ...
متن کاملFirst impressions in user-agent encounters: the impact of an agent's nonverbal behavior on users' relational decisions
We present an empirical study that investigates whether the first impressions that users form of a virtual agent have an impact on attitudes and subsequent relational behavior. Subjects experienced brief approaches to several embodied agent guides in an immersive 3D virtual museum environment. Each guide exhibited two levels (low vs. high) of extraversion and friendliness towards the subjects b...
